Talking of Design

Oi! Why Isn’t My New Website Ranking on Google Yet?

25/08/26 • WEB DESIGN, SERVICES, SEO, AFTER LAUNCH SEO

Can’t be bothered reading all this? Fair enough, here’s a summary:

  • A well-built website gives you the foundations for SEO, not an automatic high ranking.
  • New sites are often competing with businesses that already have years of authority, backlinks, reviews, search history and all that jazz.
  • The first few months should be used to build visibility rather than simply wait for Google.
  • SEO, Google Business Profile, backlinks, content and paid search can all play a part.

One of the most common assumptions after launching a new website is that good content, the right keywords and a technically sound build should quickly result in a high position on Google. Nope. Soz.

Those things are important, but they are only the starting point. A new website still has to earn visibility against competitors that may have been established online for years.

A business elsewhere in North Wales may have an older website that looks less polished than yours, but it may also have a strong backlink profile, a well-established Google Business Profile, dozens of reviews and years of search history behind it. Google is weighing up much more than the wording on a page.

Good on-page SEO gives you a platform

At launch, the website should already have strong foundations: useful content, clear page titles and headings, sensible internal linking, relevant search terms, good performance on mobile and a technical setup that search engines can crawl and understand.

When I design and build a website, these foundations are built in from the outset. I write clean, lightweight and semantically correct code, structure content logically, and use appropriate HTML elements so that search engines — and increasingly AI-powered search and discovery tools — can more easily access, understand and interpret the content and its meaning. Go me!

In other words, the technical and on-page foundations needed for search visibility are not something bolted on afterwards; they form part of how I design and develop the website in the first place.

That makes the site capable of competing. It does not mean it has already built the authority required to outrank established competitors.

Ok, so what should happen after launch?

The next stage is to build signals around the website. Depending on the business, that may include:

  • Monitoring Google Search Console and analytics
  • Improving and expanding useful website content
  • Building relevant backlinks
  • Optimising the Google Business Profile and encouraging genuine reviews
  • Using the right social channels to support visibility
  • Running Google Ads where quicker search exposure is commercially useful

The key point is simple: launching the website should not be confused with completing the marketing.

Think in months, not days

A new website may begin appearing in search results quite quickly, but meaningful organic growth usually needs time. I generally prefer to treat the first four to six months as an active growth period in which data is gathered, visibility is built and the site is refined.

The aim is not to promise a particular ranking by a particular date. It is to make sure the website is moving in the right direction and becoming more visible for searches that matter to the business.
